The article, “An Electrifying startup; A new lithium-ion battery from A123 Systems could help electric cars and hybrids come to dominate the roads, sugar coats this new lithium-ion battery to store more than twice as much energy as nickel-metal hydride batteries, which is used in today’s hybrid cars, and it also delivers bursts of power necessary for high performance. This new technology, lithium-ion batteries that we find in portable electronics such as iPods, cell phones, etc, can set the trend of using electric-vehicles, opposes to gas run vehicles. This “jump-start”, as the article describes, can lead to an increase trend in electric vehicles. Majority of vehicles are operated by gasoline and only 1 percent of our vehicles are operated electronically; the use of lithium-ion battery. The fact that this new lithium-ion battery can operate our method of transportation can help lower gas prices; eliminate pollution, and eventually majority of transportation can be dependent on these lithium-ion batteries. Also, making our nation independent on gas can help the scarcity of gasoline in the world.
The lithium-ion batter is very beneficial for organizational technology. The article states that, “The battery's promise has made A123 one of the best-funded technology startups in the country, with $148 million in venture capital investments so far. With the funding, A123 has been pursuing an ambitious business plan that calls for it to do everything from perfecting the material to manufacturing batteries and selling them to customers in the auto and power-tool industries.” This new technology can be used by organizations to improve organizational communication because it makes transportation easier and cost-sufficient.
This new technology is extremely beneficial for automobile makers, buses, taxis, and companies that travel a lot on land. Taxi’s, buses, limo’s, and other companies that transport people, base their prices on how much profit they would make after gas prices is deducted. These pries rise as gas prices rise; which is continue to increase often. The higher the cost is to use another means of transportation, most likely leads to people car pooling, walking, or taking the subway or trains.
An advantage of the lithium-ion battery is that it can increase the sales of automobiles because the vehicles no longer require gasoline. Gasoline prices are increasing and people are going to start not being able to afford gas regularly. The fact that gas prices are increasing is leading people to sell their cars and is forcing them to find another means of transportation. With a lithium-ion battery run vehicle, people will no longer need to worry about the price of gas and automobile companies will benefit and increase their sales. Another advantage of the lithium-ion battery is that it decreases population which is good for the agricultural organizations.
A disadvantage of the lithium-ion battery is that people may face problems such as the battery dying, overheating, or failing. Also, batteries need to be charged or replaced and the question is whether our contemporary world has “the time” to sit around and wait for their vehicle to be charged.
I would rate this new communication technology a 4 because in the end it has so many benefits and can help save our economy and decrease our air pollution.
